Blue Dot Observatory

A self initiated branding project for an observatory. Inspired by the astronomer and all-round good guy Carl Sagan, the observatory would adopt his mindset and ethos of human innovation, scientific curiosity, and the promotion of space exploration.

When first starting this project I conducted research into the industry, to see what else was out there and how I could make this project stand out. What I discovered was that there wasn’t much of an online and brand identity market for observatories, I believe this may be because they are quite academic, where people who are only researching the field or are great enthusiasts show an interest. I saw this as a good opportunity to make something unique.

Before creating anything visual I wanted to develop a brand ethos, setting the groundwork in understanding their values and goals would help me in the long-run.

With a primary audience of scientists & astronomers, students & educators, and space enthusiasts, it was important for the brand personality to be welcoming and accessible to all.

Brand Objectives:

Establish Authority

Convey the observatory’s credibility and expertise in the field of astronomical research.

Inspire Curiosity & Innovation

Create a visual and emotional connection that sparks curiosity about the universe and the study of astronomy.

Engage The Public

Develop an inviting, accessible brand that encourages public involvement, from school visits to public stargazing events.

Highlight Innovation & Sustainability

Reflect the observatory’s commitment to cutting-edge technology and environmental stewardship.

The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.
